SUGAR story
This is Jess here! I am the owner and baker behind SUGAR.
My desire to open SUGAR can be traced back to childhood time spent in the kitchen with my mother Sandy, Grandma Karen, and Great Grandma Edna. My family is one of matriarchy, bonded by food to bring everyone together. The four of us formed a group of four generations of baking enthusiasts. We spent countless hours together baking pies, cookies, and every traybake you can dream up; Persimmon Pudding was up there with the tastiest of them.
If you’ve not heard of Persimmon Pudding, it’s probably because you’re not from Indiana. I am a born and raised Hoosier, though I have been proud to call Edmonton my home since 2017.
That being said, baking has been my link to home while also acting as a way to make connections in a completely new environment. Everybody speaks the language of sweets! And I’m proud to use my family recipes today, sharing them with my Canadian home.

More than
just sugar
Baking holds memories. Precious memories almost frozen in time as a moment. For me, they are memories of:

Baking my mom’s Maple Walnut Cookies at the county and state fair in the summer, they won the blue ribbon!
The excitement of stopping by the Village Pantry after school for a Star Crunch treat
Prepping mom’s brownies for my brother and I to snack on while watching our favorite late night flick – Goosebumps

That happiness you feel showing up at your girlfriend’s house with a cherry pie because it’s her favourite and she just had her first baby.

Getting my hands super sticky with green marshmallow while making wreath cookies at Christmas time.

The unbridled JOY I felt watching my mother sing Happy Birthday while holding a pink cake with a Barbie shoved in it when I turned 8
